There Was a Preacher

In Soul Food on June 1, 2011 by The Spillover

There was a preacher one time, preaching about sin and repentance.
And hell.
He was one of these fundamentalist-types.
A real holier-than-though sort of fellow.
He seemed awfully radical and judgmental.
He was laying it on thick, telling everyone to flee from sin and turn toward God, no matter the cost.
He was deadly serious about sin, even mean-sounding…he even implied that sin leads people to hell.
Can you believe that?

Everyone knows that people should try not to sin, and everyone knows that people are messed up and sin all the time anyways.
People are carnal, even Christians.
Everyone knows that.

This man suggested that it would be better to maim yourself to stop yourself from sinning, than to actually commit the sin.
Doesn’t he understand the forgiveness of God?
These hard-line people are nuts-o.
And he claims to know God.
If he really knew God, he would know that Jesus is all about forgiveness and love.
This guy needs Jesus.

If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.  -Jesus (Matthew 5:29-30)
