Cold Water

In Perspective, Soul Food on June 20, 2011 by The Spillover

Do you think you’re a good person?

Don’t reply with the “churchy” answer; be 100% honest with yourself. Do you consider yourself good? Do you look down on those who you think are less righteous than you are?

Here comes the cold water (hold your nose):

The LORD looks down from heaven on the sons of men to see if there are any who understand, any who seek God. All have turned aside, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one.  -Psalms 14:2-3

This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.  -Romans 3:22-24

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.  -Isaiah 64:6

You’re not good. I’m not good. We fall short. When we try to make a case that we are good, all we’re making a case for is our rampant pride that needs to be dealt with. We’re full of sin. Who can honestly deny it? We’re full of darkness.

Religion says that if you’re good enough, you’ll make it to heaven. As one of my favorite pastors says, “The next time you’re walking in the park and you see a big stinky pile, just think, ‘that’s religion'”. Crass, but true. Religion gets you nowhere. Religion says, “be good enough to be accepted by God”. Chew on that for a while and you’ll realize that the idea of being good enough for God is asinine. We’re talking about the Creator of the universe.

Jesus says, “You’re not good enough for God. None of you. So I’ll make a way for you.”

When you accept this truth and it becomes real in your heart, God gives you a completely new life. This truth will transform you into a child of God who wants to please Him instead of men. Under the lordship of Jesus is where God’s will is found. This is where we were created to live. Whatever is holding you back from Jesus – just let it go. No matter what it is. Let it go.
