Every time we look at the cross Christ seems to say to us, “I am here because of you. It is your sin I am bearing, your curse I am suffering, your debt I am paying, your death I am dying.” Nothing in history or in the universe cuts us down to size like the cross. All of us have inflated views of ourselves, especially in self-righteousness, until we have visited a place called Calvary. It is here, at the foot of the cross that we shrink to our true size.
John Stott, who earlier today went to be with the Lord
What a powerful quote that correctly assesses an essential truth about humanity. At one level it may seem harsh, but the fact that the cross serves as the great equalizer (ie, it says the same thing to ALL of us) actually helps us to understand how much we’re worth to the One who orchestrated & endured it. Humans’ unique status as those created in the image of God is the reason why we’re the recipients of this remarkable grace of God in Christ! And it is by this grace that we become His true daughters & sons! Stott’s theological contributions have been significant. Though you may not have agreed with every conclusion he came to, I believe his insight was a blessing, overall, to the body of Christ.
So humbling.
