Thoughts About Following Jesus

In Perspective, Seekers, Soul Food on August 29, 2011 by The Spillover

Here are a few thoughts about following Christ which I believe we can be dogmatic about:

Will following Jesus necessarily make your life comfortable? No.

If you follow Jesus, will it pretty much guarantee that you won’t fall ill with some sort of terminal disease, early in life? No.

Can you at least guarantee that you won’t fall into some terrible financial difficulties if you give your life to Jesus? No.

There are preachers on TV promising “total victory” in health, wealth and relationship because of following Jesus…is that always true? No.

Will you certainly increase your number of friends by following Jesus? No.

Generally speaking, is it “safe” to follow Jesus?

Spiritually speaking, is it safe to follow Jesus, because your eternal safety transcends anything that could happen to you while on earth? YES.

If God is for us, who can be against us?  -Romans 8:31

Is it a joy to follow Christ straight toward persecution, because you have Him and He Himself is the ultimate possible reward? YES.

Blessed are you when men hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.  -Luke 6:22-23

When you become a true disciple of Christ, is it a joy to give away everything you have, including your own self, to follow Him? YES.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.  -Matthew 13:44

Jesus Christ is not the means by which we attain something great. Jesus is that something great.
